Position Overview/Job Description

 

The Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for public relations, marketing, advertising, promotions, and overall communications including but not limited to the company’s website, newsletter, printed concert materials and programs, and creation of printed donor communication materials. Major responsibilities include developing and implementing short and long-range goals for the department plus coordinating various means of communication and promotion. The Director of Communications and Marketing will consistently review the organization’s marketing approach and strategies and create unified and effective messages designed to build awareness of Saint Joseph Ballet and reinforce the organizations key messages to donors and the general public. The Director of Communications and Marketing reports directly to the Managing Director and responds to the aesthetic guidance of the Artistic Director. He/she will represent the values of Saint Joseph Ballet, Respect, Excellence, Community, and Stewardship at all times. The Director will, over time and as budget allows, build the Communications and Marketing Department and will ensure accountability within the department. He/she will create and implement a department budget within pre-established management guidelines and will coordinate internally with other departments and externally with other organizations in order to best promote Saint Joseph Ballet, its mission and programs. Working Conditions After-school dance program environment. Facility has three dance studios, education center, and community center, studio theatre. Position requires evening and weekend work and may require being on call during the evenings.

 

Job Functions Duties and Responsibilities

 

Essential Functions • Develop Saint Joseph Ballet’s communications and marketing strategy internally and externally • Develop Saint Joseph Ballet’s overall Communications and Marketing strategy ensuring the strategies are aligned with the organization’s strategic plan • Directly supervise intern and prepare the organization to grow this department to one additional full-time individual over time • Carry out the marketing plan, choosing appropriate creative assistance and develop a media plan • Recommend then place advertising designed to promote Saint Joseph Ballet’s concerts, activities, and events • Oversee public relations to ensure local/regional/national opportunities are maximized and that the over all plan coordinates with marketing initiatives • Oversee website and the newsletter, helping to determine overall communications philosophy, content, routing procedures as well as how often communications are produced/updated • Write and produce communications materials • Establish relationships with ad reps and negotiate contracts • Look for and secure media sponsorships • Keep abreast of potential advertising and related opportunities, both regionally and nationally • Plan and execute cooperative promotions with appropriate partners • General letters of agreement, short articles, advertising copy and other written materials • Hire and oversee event photographers • Submit the annual department budget with back-up (detail of expenditures from each area) • Submit for approval department expenditures with backup • Attend board meetings and report on department initiatives when requested • Perform other duties as requested by the managing director and/or artistic director

Minimum of five years experience in public relations, marketing and/or communications. Experience in creating and developing brands, communications strategies, media and communications plans. Experience serving in a leadership role a plus. Not-for-profit arts experience preferred with a proven track record in cultural and/or education industries Physical Requirements May require the ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Speak in a clear and understandable voice.

 

Education

 

Education and Experience Minimum: a bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, or related communications concentration. Minimum of five years experience in public relations, marketing and/or communications. Experience in creating and developing brands, communications strategies, media and communications plans. Experience serving in a leadership role a plus. Not-for-profit arts experience preferred with a proven track record in cultural and/or education industries. Licenses, Certificates and Other Requirements Valid California Driver’s License Position will require fingerprinting and a background check
