Job Title: Executive Director Join the dedicated team at Donkey Mill Art Center located in Holualoa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Donkey Mill Art Center is a gathering place where people of all ages and abilities develop as creative, conscious, and healthy human beings through art education and experience in contemporary visual arts, crafts and culture. This includes hands-on classes, exhibitions, artist residencies, and special events. We are currently seeking a qualified candidate to lead our organization’s strong team into a future of sustainable growth. The Mill has a qualified team in place and needs a leader who will work collaboratively to guide the staff, board, and volunteers to achieve specific goals in pursuit of our vision. He or she appreciates the quirks that make local nonprofits unique and is not afraid to get his or her hands dirty. Familiarity with the Big Island is helpful. Our ideal candidate has experience in fundraising, and is able to work in a dynamic environment. He or she is self-directed, team oriented, and considers creative solutions. DMAC Executive Director Summary:
The Executive Director acts as the Chief Executive Officer of the organization and is responsible for the overall management and direction of the Mill in accordance with its vision, mission, and values. The Executive Director works under the general oversight of the Board of Directors. Overview: We are a small, local organization that works together as an Ohana. The Executive Director provides oversight and overall management, planning, vision, and leadership for all aspects of the Donkey Mill Art Center including oversite of programs and services, finance, resource development, human resources, member services, marketing, and communications. The Executive Director works with the Board and Board Committees to establish vision, policies, strategic focus, priorities, and general scope of programs the Mill will deliver. Hands-on daily tasks are a part of the job.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES Take direction from and work with the Board to assure that the Mill operates with a clear mission and a strategic plan and goals that are consistent with our mission as a community arts center. Provide ongoing management to assure the organization stays within approved plans and budgets. Provide overall staff direction and supervision; develop a monthly work plan with staff which includes goals, objectives, inputs and outcomes, and timeline. Provide a monthly report of accomplishments and next goals to the Board. In collaboration with the Board and staff, effectively manage and work with the Donkey Mill staff to support a productive, professionally competent work force in an environment respectful of personal well-being and cultural diversity. Manage hiring, firing, and resolution of personnel issues. Develop annual budget and fundraising plan, submit to board for approval. Manage finance and fundraising; monitor expenditures and income and plan for core budget sustainability; ensure proper bookkeeping, tax and legal reporting, audits, and maintenance of capital assets. Develop a donor engagement plan including annual giving, events, corporate relations, and a major gifts program. Develop relationships and maintain regular communications with major donors to the Mill; develop relationships with new and potential donors. Oversight of volunteer relations and management. 3 Identify grant opportunities, submit grant proposals, and produce required reporting to funding sources. Develop fundraising opportunities and oversee fundraising events. Oversee development and coordination of events, programs, conferences, classes, and workshops consistent with Mill strategies and goals. Ensure program quality and consistency with organizational goals through ongoing evaluation of all programs and services to determine effectiveness and participant and member satisfaction. Work with Board and staff to develop and implement policies for all program processes such as instructor agreements, membership and registration policies, studio assistant program, cancellation and scholarship policies, etc. Ensure necessary operating resources and tools such as software, computer resources, file and information sharing, etc. Develop and execute an effective and ongoing marketing plan including social media, web-site, and traditional media. Keep the Board fully informed on conditions, opportunities, issues, and challenges for the Mill and the environment in which it operates so that the Board can carry out is governance, financial oversight and leadership role. Serve as staff member to all Board Committee unless otherwise agreed. Serve as lead spokesperson for the Mill and assure that we are appropriately represented in the community. Develop effective working relationships within the community (both within the arts community and elsewhere) to ensure that the arts are represented in the community-atlarge and for the constituency that the Mill serves.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION INCLUDE: An advanced degree, ideally an MBA (or work experience equivalent), with at least 5 years of management experience. Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach, manage and develop a high-performance team; experience in setting and achieving strategic objectives, and managing a budget. Commitment to the Donkey Mill’s mission, vision, and values and sensitivity to the unique needs, history, and cultural traditions of our local community. Demonstrated personal resilience, adaptability, and integrity and a commitment to quality programs and performance improvement. 4 Demonstrated nonprofit fundraising experience, including grant identification and management, donor cultivation, and community partnerships. Experience with nonprofit administration and the arts preferred including past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills. Successful marketing strategy development and implementation with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures. A track record of having developed and implemented strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth. Ability to ensure the smooth running of daily operations including, policies, procedures, systems, and facilities.
