ARTISTIC DIRECTOR POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Chamber Music Northwest, one of the nation’s leading producers and presenters of chamber music, seeks an engaging and dynamic musical leader to succeed David Shifrin as its new Artistic Director, beginning in 2020. The Artistic Director will conceive, articulate, and implement the artistic vision for CMNW.  The Artistic Director will continue to build the organization’s reputation as an internationally recognized music organization known for its artistic excellence, innovation, and creative diversity.

Now in its 48th season, Chamber Music Northwest produces more than 100 concerts and events annually, including a Summer Festival, a year-round season of presentations, outreach and educational programs, and innovative collaborations with other arts groups. CMNW engages the finest musicians and composers, from rising star members of our Protégé Project to world-renowned artists. With nearly 100 newly commissioned works and premieres, CMNW is also a national leader in the creation of new music. As one of the region’s most acclaimed and well-run arts organizations, it boasts an exceptional record of nearly four decades of balanced budgets, a substantial endowment, and significant operating reserves.

The ideal candidate will be a critically acclaimed musician with extensive performance experience. They will be an engaging, enthusiastic, and persuasive advocate and ambassador for chamber music in all its diversity.  This individual will possess extensive and ongoing professional relationships with concert artists, composers and artist representatives, and will understand the dynamics of artists working together in ensembles. Equally important, they will have a vision for both preserving and advancing chamber music into the future through education and support of young and early-career musicians, development of new music, exploration of innovative venues, styles of presentation, and audience engagement.

Compensation and Hiring Schedule:

Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Artistic Director Designee’s first season will begin in the fall of 2020 and conclude with the 2021 Summer Festival. To allow adequate planning time for this season, initial interviews will occur in the spring/summer of 2018. Finalists will then participate in formal interviews and activities during the 2019 Summer Festival. The Designee will be selected and contracted in the fall of 2019 to allow a full year of planning for the 2020-21 season. It is also desirable that the Designee be available to participate in some capacity, and by specific invitation from the current Artistic Director, in the 2019-20 season. Full engagement will commence after the conclusion of the current Artistic Director’s final season in September 2020.
