Initiative Overview
Sacramento has a robust arts and cultural landscape, grounded by nearly 30 museums, several symphonic music groups, a ballet company, an opera company, and over 125 theatre companies. Sacramento is also home to more than a dozen cultural festivals, six film festivals, a popular Second Saturday Art Walk, over 50 commercial art galleries, a strong poetry community and an award-winning public art program. These arts institutions and programs are responsible for a multimillion-dollar "creative economy," and contribute to the health of the Sacramento region. Yet despite the breadth and scope of these assets, the Sacramento arts and cultural scene remains virtually undiscovered. In June 2009, just six months after taking office, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson launched a regional arts initiative called "For Art's Sake." The overarching intent of the initiative is to raise the profile of Sacramento's arts scene locally and nationally; establishing Sacramento as a major metropolitan destination while strengthening the local community. More specifically, the initiative seeks to unify the arts community around a shared vision and goals for strengthening the region's cultural infrastructure, improving access to arts and arts education and investing in talent and the creative economy. The initiative has seen tremendous success to date and garnered national attention. Not only has the process been inclusive -- with over 500 artists, arts organizations, civic leaders and businesses participating -- it has resulted in a three-year action plan and implementation strategy.
