Assistant Director, Membership
Asian Art Museum

The Assistant Director, Membership oversees the strategy and revenue plan for the membership program, including acquisition and retention, ensuring growth at one of the premier art institutions in the Bay Area. This position provides leadership in expanding the museum’s membership base and Museum Fund donor base through sophisticated direct marketing strategies and loyalty-building stewardship measures.

The nature of the work requires the Assistant Director, Membership to execute special assignments and tasks under only general direction; demonstrate strong initiative; exercise considerable discretion and independent judgment; and deal independently with other staff, members, and the public.


  • Manages membership direct response program: developing, writing, deploying, and evaluating acquisitions, renewals, reinstatements, upgrades, and Museum Fund appeals. Works closely with Creative Services and external vendors on designs, production, quality control and to meet deadlines.
  • With Deputy Chief of Philanthropy, develops, tracks, and evaluates annual direct response revenue plan; leads strategy to increase revenue via sophisticated multi-channel and multi-touch campaigns; allocates resources to optimize return on investment; uses A/B testing to continually improve results.
  • Oversees the Museum Fund program, which is unrestricted, philanthropic donations from both members and guests; develops innovative strategies to increase the number of donations and the average gift received through onsite, online, direct mail and phone channels.
  • Proactively identifies and generates new prospects to support the museum (ticket buyers, event attendees, etc.) and develops initiatives to convert them into members; partners with the Guest Experience, Marketing, Retail and Digital departments to identify prospects; works closely with Individual Giving staff to coordinate the solicitation of new prospects and upgrade current donors.
  • Ensures that fundraising campaigns are executed comprehensively and holistically for the biggest impact possible; each campaign executed through various media channels (direct mail, web, social media, email, onsite, etc.) and be timed and targeted thoughtfully and strategically to increase responses; campaign coordination requires close partnerships with the Marketing, Creative Services and Digital departments.
  • Conceptualizes and manages the implementation of all member events, making sure offerings in line with annual fulfillment plan; creates and oversees mailing of invitations; oversees the work of the Special Events coordinator related to membership events, ensuring that all details are planned and budgets are met. Also oversees communications to members around events, making sure attendance is tracked that that guests receive reminders and follow-up thank you messages. Analyzes success of each event and proposes adjustments for the future, ensuring that program is always improving. Attends membership events (and other select events/programs) with the purpose of stewarding members.
  • Manages member benefits, developing new ideas to keep the member experience fresh and exciting and making sure that these benefits are communicated effectively to members.
  • Manages membership marketing and communications plans. Communication channels include letters, invitations, e-newsletters, signage, website pages, and publications. Partners with Marketing, Communications and Digital to promote membership campaigns across digital platforms — social media, email marketing, and web. Also, works with onsite team and Assistant Director, Guest Experience to market membership campaigns prominently onsite through signage and collateral. Assists other departments with publications and communications that members receive, such as the Asian magazine.
  • Maintains schedule of ongoing partnerships opportunities with peer institutions to enhance member experience and expose Asian Art Museum membership to new audiences.
  • Works closely with the Assistant Director of Development Information Systems to ensure timely, accurate recordkeeping of member donations and other member information; oversees the production of regular statistical reports on membership.
  • Hires, supervises, directs, trains, and evaluates Membership staff and volunteers.


  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience, including managing a membership program and supervising staff and managing a budget
  • A solid background in membership and/or Annual Fund direct mail programs and an interest in the arts and humanities.
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel; knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and/or Siriusware preferred.
  • Ability to conceptualize and implement creative and successful methods of membership solicitation; promote the museum’s activities to ethnically and culturally diverse groups and communities; plan, organize, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to supervise, direct, motivate, and evaluate staff and volunteers; establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relationships with Board members, volunteers, patrons, and museum personnel at all levels; and excel at customer relation skills.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills; excellent writing and oral communication skills; high level of analytical, presentation, negotiation, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills; action and results oriented; diplomatic and tactful.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive working relationships with staff, volunteers, and members of the public; promote membership activities to ethnically and culturally diverse groups and communities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; adhere to deadlines; demonstrate flexibility in meeting shifting demands and priorities.
  • Ability to lift up to twenty (20) pounds.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends, as needed. 


Normal office environment. Some extended hours on nights and weekends required.
