Development & Communications Manager

Title: Development & Communications Manager

Classification: Full-Time, Exempt

Compensation: $52k - $57k (depending on experience), employer-paid health and dental insurance, plus generous paid time off

Reports to: Executive Director

Supervises: Patron & Donor Services Manager (shared supervision with Executive Director)

Located in Pasadena, California, Boston Court Performing Arts Center (BCPAC) is non-profit arts center primarily dedicated to developing new work and nurturing emerging and established artists. Founded in 2003 by philanthropist Z. Clark Branson, Boston Court features a state-of-the-art, intimate facility designed to bring audiences and artists closer together. The 80-seat Marjorie Branson Performance Space and the 99-seat Main Stage serve as homes for Boston Court's season of daring, adventurous theatre and its eclectic, diverse music series.  BCPAC is also the home of an annual new play festival, an emerging artists concert series, as well as rotating visual art exhibits.  Boston Court is led by an engaged 13-member Board of Directors, Executive Director Kyle Clausen, and Artistic Directors Jessica Kubzansky and Michael Michetti (Theatre), and Mark Saltzman (Music).


Under the leadership of and in collaboration with the new Executive Director of BCPAC, the Development and Communications Manager will be the primary staff member responsible for implementing integrated fundraising and communications plans with the goals of raising awareness of BCPAC and its programs, building a donor pipeline, and increasing contributed revenue.  The ideal candidate will have 3 - 5 years experience in fundraising with particular experience in individual giving.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:

Development (70%)

  • Develop and implement annual fundraising and stewardship plan, and serve as key staff member to create and nurture a Culture of Philanthropy throughout the organization.
  • Develop and manage individual donor campaigns, including acquiring new donors, increasing donor renewal and upgrade rates, and building a pipeline for major gifts
  • Assist Executive Director with cultivation and solicitation of major gifts
  • Prepare and oversee all direct mail fundraising campaigns
  • Share supervision of the Patron & Donor Services Manager, who plays a key role in donor renewal and acknowledgement processes, data management, and benefit fulfillment
  • Develop and execute all fundraising and stewardship events, including the annual gala
  • Ensure that contributors receive proper acknowledgement and recognition, including  accurate representation in all printed materials
  • Serve as staff liaison to the BCPAC Development Committee, coordinate meetings, and help focus the committee on measurable and timely development goals
  • Assist Executive Director with identification and cultivation of potential individual, corporate, and foundation gift prospects
  • Assist Executive Director in writing, tracking, and reporting on grant applications and awards
  • Work with General Manager to track and reconcile contributed revenue, and prepare appropriate reports tracking progress against goal
  • Along with all BCPAC staff, work select performances and events to represent the organization to the public

Communications (30%)

  • Develop and implement communications strategies and tools to increase awareness of Boston Court and its programs, in service of growing audience and funding
  • Develop communications vehicles to keep BCPAC patrons and donors aware of and engaged with Boston Court programs throughout the year
  • Work with Executive Director and Graphic Designer/Marketing Assistant to write, edit, and maximize the impact of BCPAC's quarterly program books


The ideal candidate will be a personable and dynamic self-starter with the following qualifications:

  • 3 - 5 years experience working in development, preferably with a non-profit cultural organization
  • Experience in donor communications and/or institutional communications
  • An analytical and data-driven mind, and the ability to synthesize complex information and data into actionable plans
  • Proven experience building relationships and increasing revenue
  • Fluency with computers and standard software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience working with database systems
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as necessary, especially during performance seasons
  • Preferred: Knowledge of the Los Angeles arts and culture community
  • Preferred: Experience raising money for new or unusual work
