Associate Director, Individual Giving
California Shakespeare Theater

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Position Summary

The Associate Director of Individual Giving (AD) is a new position providing additional leadership to a team dedicated to securing contributed resources for Cal Shakes’ artistic and education programs, which expand participation in the arts and build more vibrant communities. The AD is primarily responsible for leading staff who are focused on individual giving, and who execute annual fund campaigns, fulfill donor benefits, and produce cultivation and fundraising events. The AD partners with the Director of Development to conduct annual and longer-range strategic planning, expand our base of Annual Fund and Legacy Circle donors, manage core department operations, and collaborate with the Marketing Team to create and execute integrated communication strategies. This position is integral to building our relationships with donors at all levels, and to sustaining Cal Shakes’ reputation of integrity, professionalism and success in fundraising.

  • You are results-oriented, with demonstrated success in managing multiple and/or complex projects
  • You have successfully built and managed project budgets, and are adept with interpreting and managing financial information
  • You have a strong track record of building relationships with donors or similar stakeholders
  • You are able to adapt to unexpected circumstances, and work under pressure with poise, grace and diplomacy

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Annual Fund Campaign Management (30%)

  • Partner with the Director of Development to develop Annual Fund campaign strategies and messaging, and to set and achieve ambitious annual revenue goals
  • Write copy for direct mail appeals, email and online communications, and audience ask appeals
  • Oversee execution of direct mail, email, online, telefunding, and performance season “Audience Ask” campaigns
  • Monitor progress toward revenue goals and analyze campaign response rates among targeted donor and prospect segments
  • Develop and manage campaign budgets and expenditures

Individual Giving Team Management (35%)

  • Supervise three full-time, direct reports: Donor Stewardship Manager, Special Events Manager, and Patron Services Manager
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and quarterly check-ins
  • Provide ongoing support and oversight of personnel to ensure they can meet high performance standards and accomplish annual goals, to foster their sense of ownership and job satisfaction, and to facilitate their professional development
  • Partner with the Director of Development to create and sustain a cohesive, collegial, high-performance team of Cal Shakes fundraising professionals

 Donor Cultivation and Special Events (15%):

  • Oversee fulfillment of Annual Fund donor benefits
  • Oversee the production of cultivation and secondary ticketed fundraising events
  • Oversee ticket sales, and guest registration and check out at annual gala
  • Partner with the Director of Development and the Special Events Manager to develop and manage event budgets and expenditures
  • Oversee the Donor Stewardship Manager and Development Coordinator to provide guest profiles and cultivation assignments for staff and board at cultivation and fundraising events

 Department Operations (15%)

  • Monitor and approve Annual Fund and special event expenditures against budgets, and ensure record-keeping accuracy
  • Conduct monthly reviews of financial statements in concert with other department staff
  • Participate as necessary in developing data management policies and procedures, and ensure the integrity and confidentiality of Cal Shakes constituent databases
  • Oversee administrative management systems related to Annual Fund donors and related record-keeping, and maintaining updated documentation of policies and practices
  • Partner with the Director of Development and other staff to ensure a healthy, inclusive, and collaborative work culture within the department and across the organization

 Other Duties (5%):

  • Support community relations and donor development by representing Cal Shakes at both Cal Shakes and community functions, as assigned
  • Attend department and company-wide meetings and retreats
  • Other duties as required

Working Environment:

  • Open office environment, frequent interruptions, background noise
  • Position requires occasional evening and weekend hours, particularly during the Main Stage season
  • Theater is open-air; activities may require extended standing and walking on uneven surfaces

Supervision:  The Associate Director, Individual Giving reports to the Director of Development

Compensation: Competitive salary DOE, plus competitive benefits
