The Pasadena Playhouse seeks a communicative, confident and charismatic leader as its Executive Artistic Director. Approaching its 100th anniversary in 2017, The Pasadena Playhouse has a rich and vibrant history. Sheldon Epps became artistic director in 1997 with a focus on mainstage artistic excellence. After nearly twenty years of outstanding artistic direction at The Playhouse, Sheldon Epps has announced that he will be retiring after the 2016/2017 season. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Artistic Director will be charged with leading The Playhouse into the next phase of its extraordinary journey. As the administrative and artistic leader of The Playhouse, the Executive Artistic Director will be responsible for providing the artistic vision and strategic direction while overseeing the organization’s resources to ensure continued success in carrying out its mission. The scope of responsibility will include artistic and programmatic policies, external and community relations, audience development, fund development, long-range planning, as well as operational, financial, and administrative management. Together with the Board of Directors, the Executive Artistic Director will work to ensure The Playhouse’s financial and operational stability and success in achieving its artistic, financial and outreach goals. The Executive Artistic Director will oversee an annual budget of between $6 to $8 million and a total full time staff of 25. The successful candidate will be comfortable and confident in providing leadership to develop and execute comprehensive fundraising plans. An excellent knowledge of fiscal management is critical, including the ability to increase both earned and contributed income. Ideally, candidates will have a combination of experience that includes previous employment in nonprofit equity theatre with both artistic and administrative leadership. Candidates with senior level experience aspiring to take on an artistic and general management role will be considered. Some knowledge of Southern California, while not essential, would be helpful.
