Artistic Assistant/Music Librarian
La Jolla Music Society

Job Description: The Music Librarian / Artistic Assistant is responsible for the procurement, distribution, and management of all music for the festival and provides general operating support to the Artistic Department and Artist Liaison as needed.

Self-directed responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Music Librarian:

The Librarian will be responsible for marking individual parts with bowings and notes from the conductor's score as necessary.  Knowledge of classical music repertoire and the ability to read music is required. The Librarian may also be asked to act as page turner during dress rehearsals and occasional concerts. Music Librarian will:

  • Act as primary point of contact for all music-related questions and concerns, and be on call to handle urgent situations at any time
  • Manage all aspects of music preparation and distribution, including but not limited to photocopying, assembling, and marking string parts, and obtaining scores for recording engineer
  • Prepare music for Artist Welcome Bags
  • Attend ALL chamber orchestra rehearsals and performances
  • Distribute and collect music at select concerts and rehearsals
  • Liaise with recording engineer
  • Maintain the SummerFest library and coordinate the timely return of all rented or borrowed scores/parts

Artistic Assistant:

  • Provide general operating support to artistic department (photocopying, editing, running festival errands as needed)
  • Participate in production meetings and other events as assigned, including concerts, rehearsals, workshops, interviews, and special events
  • Drive Artists to rehearsals and engagements in LJMS Van as needed
  • Page turning as needed

Contractor Requirements:

The Music Librarian/ Artistic Assistant must be self-directed.  The goals and objectives of this position will be set by the La Jolla Music Society.  The direction, manner and means by which those objectives are carried out are controlled by the Music Librarian/Artistic Assistant and will be fully dependent on his or her own management and organizational skills. 

  • Candidate must commit to full availability (including nights and weekends) from
  • July 20th through August 27th
  • Must be highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to remain composed and positive under high-stress situations
  • High level of maturity and professionalism
  • Must be a team player who can work cooperatively with many different personalities
  • Must have valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Knowledge of the local area is helpful
  • Flexible schedule including availability to work nights and weekends as required for concert and rehearsal coverage 
Compensation: Stipend of $1,500
