Director of Volunteer Services
Philharmonic Society of Orange County

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County seeks a Director of Volunteer Services to support the activities of the Society’s Board of Directors and Committees. The Board of Directors, with approximately 25 members, provides leadership and governance oversight for the Society, meeting regularly. The Committees volunteer and raise funds to support the Society’s youth music education programs and its concert activities.

The Philharmonic Society is the region’s leading classical music presenter, and is in its 63rd season of bringing the world’s finest orchestras, chamber ensembles and solo artists to Orange County. We are a resident company at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, and we also present at the Irvine Barclay Theatre at U.C. Irvine and the Musco Center for the Arts at Chapman University. The Society’s full season of classical programming is augmented by eclectic, holiday and family programming. The Society is also dedicated to bringing music into the lives of young people and has an extensive array of youth music education programs serving 160,000 K-12 students throughout the county annually. The Philharmonic Society is supported by an annual budget of $4.5 million, a dedicated Board of Directors and an 800-member volunteer corps. A dynamic new President and Artistic Director has set an exciting vision for the future, and the Society is now executing a five-year strategic plan to support program expansion and future growth. 

Key Responsibilities for the Board of Directors: 

  • Facilitate interaction between PSOC staff and Board of Directors. 
  • Work with President and Chairman of the Board to schedule and plan all aspects of the Society Annual Meeting, including:
  • Select appropriate date and location. Arrange amenities and entertainment
  • Create and mail invitation/proxy form and list of Board Nominees to all Society Members
  • Tabulate returned proxies and make results available to the Proxy Committee
  • Assist presenters as needed
  • Take minutes and store in accordance with audit requirements
  • Work with President and Chairman of the Board to schedule all Board, Executive Committee and Committee meetings, including Retreats
  • Select appropriate dates and locations.  Arrange amenities as needed
  • Attend meetings as appropriate
  • Take minutes and store in accordance with audit requirements
  • Prepare and maintain all Society documents, including History, Mission Statement, ByLaws, Board Responsibilities, Board Roster, Committee descriptions and assignments
  • Assist Board Chairman and Committee Chairs as needed

Key Responsibilities for the Committees:

  • Facilitate interaction between the Philharmonic Society of Orange County’s staff and The Committees’ volunteers.  
  • Supervise Huntington Harbour Office Manager
  • Oversee Committees’ web pages
  • Oversee House of Design website
  • Train volunteers in the use of credit card machines and cash registers before fundraisers
  • Update and distribute the Committees’ Directory and Chairman Handbooks each summer
  • Coordinate the production of the quarterly newsletter, the “Overture.”
  • Attend Committees Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings as


  • Provide administrative support for House of Design
  • Schedule meetings in the office and off-site (OCDE, Northern Trust)
  • Welcome all volunteers and others who come into the office and assist as needed 

Other Duties:

  • Assist President and Artistic Director as needed
  • Process all trademark renewal

Required qualifications and experience include: three years or more of leadership experience with volunteers, preferably with an arts-related institution, nonprofit organization, or educational institution of similar complexity.
