Scenic Carpenter Part-Time
Laguna Playhouse

Laguna Beach, CA

Laguna Playhouse is currently seeking experience, skilled, and reliable scenic carpenters to start IMMEDIATELY for over-hire work on a part-time basis. May require nights and weekends.

Under the supervision of the Production Manager and Technical Director, Scenic Carpenters participate in fabrication, delivery, installation, repair, striking, and the transfer of scenery for Laguna Playhouse productions. Scenic Carpenters occasionally share additional maintenance, safety, and improvement projects to the Playhouse facilities. The individual in this position work within safety guidelines and to a standard of quality which are in turn to be promoted among peers in the organization. The position may function independently on projects, as well as in coordination with efforts of contingent employees and peers, and in support of other project leads.

Basic Qualifications

  • A good knowledge of materials and the proper use of each for scenery construction, particularly wood, metal and plastics.  Experience fabricating in wood and steel.
  • Knowledgeable in the safe use of typical wood shop machine and hand power tools.
  • Experience with stage rigging and the use of a single purchase line set system.
  • Knowledgeable in safe use metal fabrication equipment and of light gauge steel welding and fabrication techniques a plus.
  • Experience with stage machinery, winches, computers and motion operation is preferred.
  • Must possess a keen awareness of shop safety and procedures and be confident in customary scenery construction.

Physical Requirements

  • As much as 80% - 100% of the workday may be on your feet involving lifting, climbing and moving of props and construction material.
  • Lifting 40 - 70 lbs. is required as well as climbing and working on ladders.
  • This position is physically demanding.
  • Lifting and safely controlling weights of up to 70 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to work with and operate large power tools.
