Museum Store Sales Associate
The Contemporary Jewish Museum

Position Purpose

The Museum Store Sales Associate is expected to provide a welcoming and warm reception to visitors to The Contemporary Jewish Museum (The CJM) and to the Museum Store. The Sales Associate offers accurate and detailed product information to customers, and is required to be well versed on The CJM’s exhibitions and programs. The Sales Associate is expected to deliver an exceptional level of customer service and to close sales directly with customers. The Sales Associate will assist the Museum Store Director in executing creative display ideas and in keeping merchandise well stocked and organized on the sales floor.    

The successful individual in this role will be interested in transforming traditional retail activities to more varied experiences in a flexible environment. This may include servicing a visitor lounge or an events space, while also staying focused to deliver specific monthly sales goals. This individual will also support the Director in implementing new technologies.

The Museum Store Sales Associate works a regular schedule of approximately 2 days per week which may include an evening or weekend.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Greet visitors in an outgoing and courteous manner.  Contribute to a congenial atmosphere on the sales floor
  • Actively engage with potential customers and close sales
  • Communicate accurate and clear  information on merchandise, and on the exhibitions and programs at The CJM
  • Process all Store financial transaction, including sales, returns, credits, and applicable discounts.  Provide gift wrapping service    
  • Ensure cleanliness of the cash wrap area and Store displays
  • Assist in preparing merchandise for the sales floor and in re-stocking of merchandise
  • Fulfill other duties or projects as assigned.  These may include activities to further the development of flexible spaces for retail and other activities

Minimum Qualifications

  • AA degree and/or coursework in business and art history or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Two or more years recent retail experience.  Specialty retail and/ or museum store experience desirable
  • Demonstrated business acumen, high level of organizational skills, and dependable and punctual

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Exceptional selling skills; ability to share enthusiasm for merchandise and The Museum overall
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience and skill in processing sales transactions, and understanding of basic retail inventory and accounting.  Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to bring a calm demeanor to problem solving with members of the public
  • Knowledge of Jewish history and contemporary art
  • Interest in and commitment to the mission of The Contemporary Jewish Museum

Physical Requirements

  • Capable of standing for extended periods of time
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and to climb a stepladder
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs
  • Ability to work evening and/or weekend hours
