Director of Development
Opera Parallele

Title: Director of Development
Classification: Full-time, year-round, exempt
Reports to: Executive Director

Job Summary:
A member of a four-person staff team and working directly with the Executive Director and Artistic Director, the Director of Development (DOD) leads all contributed revenue campaigns and plays an important role in building the organization’s development infrastructure to enable Opera Parallèle to effectively steward donor relations. The DOD oversees the Development and Marketing Coordinator and is the liaison to the Development committee and Development sub-committees of the board.

About the Organization:
Based in San Francisco, Opera Parallèle (OP) is an award-winning professional, non-profit organization that develops and performs contemporary opera throughout the Bay Area. Having just completed its 7th performance season, Opera Parallèle commissions re-orchestrations of contemporary grand opera to give a sense of intimacy to its productions and to give an afterlife to contemporary works. These works provide a platform to bring together new audiences and emerging talent through workshops, seminars, readings of new works, and community engagement programs. OP is on a rapid growth trajectory with increased national visibility and a current organizational budget of just over $1M. OP is governed by a 20-member Board of Directors.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and implementation of all of OP’s contributed revenue campaigns which focus on raising $900k+/year from individuals (major donors and annual fund), foundations, corporate sponsorships, and events.
  • Manage major donor prospecting and research efforts to ensure a robust pipeline of prospective major donors.
  • In partnership with the Executive Director and Development Committee, create and lead corporate/business partnership campaigns which range from securing production sponsors to program ad sales.
  • Partner with all OP board members, Executive/Artistic Directors to coordinate targeted stewardship and cultivation opportunities.
  • Provide support to ED and contracted grant-writer by providing donor analysis, campaign budgets testimonials and other institutional materials for proposals and reports.
  • Oversee the maintenance of OP’s patron database, gift entry, and the generation of timely acknowledgement letters to donors, foundations, and corporations.
  • Manage fulfillment and tracking of donor benefits.
  • Oversee and manage donor cultivation events (i.e. create/run invitation lists, facilitate invitation printing and mailing, interface with volunteers and event vendors, and manage event logistics).
  • With ED, Finance Committee Chair, OP’s bookkeeper, reconcile Donor Snap with Quickbooks on a monthly basis to ensure that gifts and expenses are booked accurately and timely.
  • Provide support to annual gala as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of fund development leadership.
  • Exceptionally strong and mature interpersonal skills. Ability to interface smoothly and authentically with all OP constituents.
  • Strong communications skills and the ability to prepare copy for Development-related materials (brochures, newsletters, program notes, grant proposals/reports).
  • High proficiency with Mac, Donor Snap (or comparable fundraising software), Excel, Dropbox, and GoogleDocs
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to independently multi-task within a fast-paced environment and a proven self-starter.
  • Interest and basic knowledge of classical music, preferably opera.
  • A collaborative spirit.
  • Sense of humor a plus!

Compensation:
Flexible schedule. Salary plus vacation and personal days, Simple IRA plan.
