Artists in Schools 2011-12 grant recipients announced

The California Arts Council announces funding for the 2011-12 "Artists in Schools" program. "Artists in Schools" is designed to support professional teaching artists in residency activities in classrooms and after-school programs. The program will provide funding for 135 arts organizations to help bring music, theater, dance, visual arts and related arts to children statewide during the 2011-12 school year.

The Arts Council invites Californians to participate in California Arts Day and "Drive Creativity" on October 7

Thousands of Californians will celebrate the 11th annual California Arts Day on Friday, October 7, 2011, and millions across the nation will take part in National Arts and Humanities Month events in October 2011. The theme for  this year's annual celebration is "Drive Creativity," emphasizing the importance of the arts, innovation and arts education in the Golden State.

New ArtWorks! story: San Jose Taiko

For almost 40 years, San Jose Taiko has kept the drum sounding in one of the three remaining Japantowns in the United States (the other two are San Francisco and Los Angeles). But the popularity of the art form makes San Jose Taiko much in demand all over the state, nation and world. They've played in small community centers and at Carnegie Hall, and the ensemble was the first American taiko drum group invited to perform in Japan. With long-time founders and artistic directors Roy and P.J. Hirabayahi turning over the helm to Wisa Uemura and Franco Imperial, the next generation continues a remarkable tradition.
