Special event on January 27, 2016 in Sacramento will honor Governor Brown, arts community and supporters
SACRAMENTO - The California Arts Council announced today that former Council member Annette Bening will host a special anniversary celebration for the agency on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 5:30pm at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento.
A free public celebration hosted by Bening will honor the forty-year history of the California Arts Council with featured dance and music performances. Special guests include Peter Coyote, a founding member and the second Chair of the California Arts Council, and Juan Felipe Herrera, United States Poet Laureate and former California Poet Laureate.
Performers include: AXIS Dance Company, Ballet Folklórico de Sacramento, The Great Wall Youth Orchestra, Lula Washington Dance, Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, and Taiko drum leaders Roy and PJ Hirabayashi.
The California Arts Council was established in 1976 by then-Governor Jerry Brown. In its 40 year history, the California Arts Council has made significant contributions to California's artists, arts organizations, and communities through grant programs, support services, arts education projects, and other important efforts advancing the state through the arts and creativity. The California Arts Council has survived budget cuts and now stands strong, with a permanent state budget increase of $7 million dollars in place this year. California's legislature and governor have demonstrated continued appreciation for the arts, recognizing their vital contributions to California's success as a state.
Annette Bening is a passionate advocate for arts education and served as a member of the California Arts Council from 2004-2008. As a Council Member, Bening fought for increased state arts funding and championed arts initiatives for young people across California.

Tickets: Tickets to the celebration are free. Reservations can be made online at http://arts.ca.gov/cac40rsvp/. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Businesses interested in sponsoring the celebration are encouraged to join the California Arts Council's "First Forty" campaign. The Arts Council is seeking forty businesses to purchase forty California Arts License Plate gift vouchers in support of their 40th anniversary.
