Hermosa Beach Lifeguard Service - Pre 1936
For Southern CA artists

Hermosa Beach Murals Project (HBMP) a non-profit organization dedicated to installing 10 exterior murals that depict important aspects of Hermosa Beach since 1907.

Last week the HBMP kicked off its search for a local artist/muralist to create and install our 7th of 10 historical murals, the theme of which is the "Hermosa Beach Lifeguard Service - pre 1936."

The site of the mural will be at rear of the Mediterreaneo Restaurant at 73 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.

The propowsed mural site is a stucco wall 30'L X 20'H.

Prior to the LA County Lifeguards taking over guard duties in Hermosa Beach, the city had its own lifeguard serevice. As the Red Car brought more and more people to Hermosa's shore it became impossible for the small beach community to provide the level of service required. Faced with the problem, then Mayor Logan Cotton, negotiated an agreement with the County of LA to assume responsibility.

The theme of our 7th mural will be to portray Hermosa Beach's Lifeguard Service before it was handed over to LA County.

Information and photographs describing the Lifeguard Service will be available from the Hermosa Beach Historical Society's museum by arrangement. Artists are encouraged to do their own research as well.

Other than for the mural's theme the HBMP's board has  no preconceived idea of the style or specific content of the mural. We're looking to the artist for that.

The selection process will be informal. Interested artists will be asked to submit a concept rendering and proposal that embodies the theme of pre 1936 HB lifeguards. A preliminary review will be conducted by the Theme and Concept committee. Concept renderings will be presented by the Theme and Concept committee to the full HBMP Board of Directors. A selection will be made by the full board and the board's chairperson will be authorized to negotiate a contract covering all aspects of the project including cost, installation dates, liability, etc. Once the artist is selected and notified, and the contract is signed 'let the painting begin.'
