Open Studio Artist in Residence - Museum of Children’s Arts

The Museum of Children's Arts (MOCHA) provides educational outreach programs in schools (K-12) and in the community throughout the Bay Area. MOCHA offers in-school and after-school residencies and professional development opportunities for classroom teachers. MOCHA also offers programs in the museum's gallery and studios. These include exhibitions, camps, field trips, open studio, and art parties.

MOCHA is seeking an Artist in Residence for its Open Studio program. Open Studio artists facilitate drop-in studio sessions for children, youth and their families. This is a contract position with a three-month term (October-December).

Responsibilities

  • Develop contextual and age-appropriate hands-on arts lessons and activities

  • Coordinate with MOCHA staff to obtain supplies and maintain a responsibility to museum facility and art supplies

  • Assist youth and adults as they interact with the studio environment. Encourage creativity and exploration of materials

  • Set-up and clean-up of art studio

  • Themed curriculum changes regularly

  • Display artwork in gallery

  • Attend meetings

  • Complete necessary evaluations and reports

Qualifications

  • Experience providing hands-on arts education to youth

  • Ability to engage youth in the arts

  • Experience designing and implementing developmentally appropriate art curriculum

  • Knowledge of youth development and arts education practices

  • Ability to create safe, inclusive, and creative environments for children, youth, families and volunteers

  • Must have strong people skills and the ability to work well with children, adults and the general public

  • Experience with and interest in working with pre-school age children highly desired

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with a proven ability to manage multiple tasks, plan ahead, anticipate program needs, and work independently

  • Ability to problem-solve, be flexible and imaginative

  • A sense of humor and excellent communication skills

  • Bilingual is a plus

  • Highly energetic is a must

This Position Reports To: Director of Programs

Hours: Wednesday–Friday (10:00–1:00) with an additional 5 hours of planning/setup/cleanup time per week. An additional one Saturday a month (the third) from 10:00-1:00. 

Rate of Pay: $17-20 per hour
