Media Arts Assistant

Full-Time/ Non-Exempt

An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the Japanese American National Museum ( is recognized as one of the nation’s premier cultural museums. The National Museum is located adjacent to the Metro Gold Line in the historic Little Tokyo/arts district in downtown Los Angeles, a neighborhood that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants, shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife.

The media arts are a transformative means of expression and the National Museum founders made a visionary commitment to integrating moving images into exhibitions, educational programs, and outreach.  An in-house media arts center accomplished the goal of providing JANM with a wide range of broadcast-quality, digital productions and services while insuring a creative process that is highly informed, resourceful, responsive and accountable to staff

The Media Arts Assistant is responsible for the production of the media products of the Frank H. Watase Media Arts Center.

Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Media Arts, Film, Video Production, Photography or related field preferred.  Minimum 3 years of film/video production experience. Prior non-profit or museum experience desired. Flexible hours desired, will require some weekend and evening hours. AV experience (mix boards, projectors, microphones) a plus. Knowledge of Japanese American History and culture a plus. Experience with Apple Macintosh systems and software (Final Cut Pro, AfterEffects/Motion, Photoshop, Compressor) and MS Word and Excel. Knowledge of file formats and codecs for a variety of display devices. Knowledge of color correction and sound mixing. Knowledge of lighting, audio recording, digital cameras (Sony FS7, Canon 5D, Panasonic AG130), camera supports (stabilizers, sliders, etc.). Requires occasional offsite travel (car and valid CA driver license with proof of insurance). Visit for more information/application form. EOE.
