Executive Director

Mission of ArtReach:

ArtReach is a not-for-profit organization located in San Diego that provides sequential, standards-based visual arts education taught by practicing artists to K-6 schools throughout San Diego County with an emphasis on providing free or very low-cost programs to schools with no resources for art. ArtReach also provides fee-based workshops to schools or organizations that have the ability to pay and partners with like-minded organizations to offer art-making opportunities at festivals and events.

Summary of Executive Director Position:

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the liaison between ArtReach and the community, and works to create both funding sources and visibility for ArtReach. The ED leads fundraising efforts for ArtReach, including researching and writing grants, collaborating with the board to produce fundraising events, cultivating individual donors, and investigating opportunities for funding, such as fee-based activities and collaborations. The ED is responsible for all grant oversight and follow-up.

The ED networks and collaborates with others in the arts, education, and nonprofit communities to create greater visibility and forge new partnerships for ArtReach. The ED investigates avenues outside of the classroom that further ArtReach’s goal of creating opportunities for children to have visual art experiences whenever possible, especially in schools that have no other resources for visual arts education. The ED produces and maintains ArtReach marketing materials, such as the website and printed brochures. Occasional evening and weekend work is required.

ArtReach Team Reporting Stream:

  • Executive Director reports to Board President/Board of Directors
  • Program Manager reports to Executive Director
  • Teaching Artists/Assistants ultimately report to Executive Director

Executive Director Duties:


  • Cultivates individual donors
  • Develops long-range fundraising strategy
  • Researches grant opportunities
  • Writes grants to appropriate institutions, foundations
  • Updates and maintains funders reports as required by grant awards
  • Works with board to create fundraising events
  • Investigates sponsorship opportunities
  • Uses eTapestry donor management system to track donations and communicate with donors

Community Relations/Marketing

  • Keeps website content current
  • Produces marketing materials, such as brochures
  • Writes and disseminates press releases and follows up with media
  • Networks with other arts groups and non-profits to create beneficial partnerships


  • Ensures the level of excellence and quality of all ArtReach programs
  • Develops knowledge and general oversight of ArtReach programs, Program Manager, and artistic team
  • Works with executive committee to create annual budget
  • Oversees budget by approving expenditures and tracking income
  • Keeps insurance and government certificates up-to-date
  • Oversees payroll

Program Development

  • Investigates additional avenues to offer arts education to children
  • Keeps abreast of arts education and arts advocacy in the community
  • Coordinates training for new artists and ongoing staff training to keep the program fresh and on-track

Position Requirements:

 Excellent verbal and written communication: will be asked to provide writing samples

Knowledge of non-profit fundraising strategies and financial statements
Experience in social media Public Relations

Ability to multi-task

Willingness to do whatever is necessary to get the job done
Competency in Excel and Word software

Knowledge of eTapestry software helpful

Current TB test required

Background check
