Bookkeeper (Part Time)
Kitka, Inc.

Kitka, Inc. an Oakland, CA-based not-for-profit cultural arts organization with an annual operating budget of $250,000-$350,000 seeks a full-charge bookkeeper with an understanding of, and experience in, not-for-profit financial management, Mac-based Quickbooks, and Excel.

Responsibilities include:


  • Oversee Office Manager's ongoing light bookkeeping work (AR/AP, billing, bank deposits and inventory
  • Process all online and e-commerce activity, including Paypal, Stripe and Square
  • Maintain general ledger through financial statements
  • Monthly reconciliation of bank statements; Paypal, merchant card, and brokerage accounts
  • Enter monthly payroll information in general ledger
  • Preparation of quarterly financial reports for Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Communication with staff re: bookkeeping needs and procedures related to their program areas
  • Oversee cash flow requirements
  • Complete all required charitable organization year-end returns: 990, 199, RRF-1
  • Oversee internal systems of handling of funds
  • Assist with audit preparation (if needed)
  • Hold responsibility for computer back-up of company financial records, including off-site security copy.
  • Assist in creating policies and documentation procedures for Kitka-specific financial and accounting issues
  • Provide technical support (bookkeeping software updates, trouble-shooting, and back-ups)
  • Maintain current knowledge of non-profit reporting regulations
  • Maintain an accurate and complete trail of supporting documentation for all financial and bookkeeping activities
  • Maintain up-to-date, complete, and systematic filing system to support bookkeeping and financial records
  • Prepare yearly 1099's
  • Prepare quarterly sales tax return




  • 5 years professional full-charge bookkeeping experience and at least two years experience in not-for-profit bookkeeping through financial statements
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented and systematic nature
  • Highly efficient and productive work style

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Technically sound and confident with computer technology
  • Independent worker
  • Competent in Quickbooks, Microsoft Excel, and other basic computer programs (Word, e-mail, Internet)
  • Ability to effectively organize and prepare back-up documentation to support any financial information reported externally.

  • Interest in performing arts, vocal, choral, and world music a plus


Time Commitment:

6-8 hours per month, beginning in May 2017
