Position:

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DANCE

This is a full-time, 175-day (10-month annual contract) tenure-track faculty position in the Fine Arts Department. This instructor instructs in dance including ballet, modern, jazz, and two of the following specialties; Hip Hop, Tap, Folkloric, Salsa, Partnering and Choreography; evaluates and advises students; directs, choreographs main stage concerts and organizes and directs off campus community outreach; plans and organizes instructional materials toward course objectives. The instructor participates in program review and curriculum development; reviews and revises content of course(s) as necessary; maintains five (5) required office hours per week for student consultation; participates in department and college activities; maintains class and examination schedules as well as grade and attendance records, according to college regulations and timelines; and performs related tasks as required. The assignment may include teaching at off-campus centers and/or evening and weekend classes.

BEGINNING DATE

  • August 2017, pending board approval.
SALARY AND FRINGE BENEFITS
  • Hiring salary range is $52,834 to $72,954 depending upon education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,500 is paid annually.
  • Benefits include medical, dental, life, vision (employee only), and salary protection insurance.
QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE
The governing board seeks an individual with the following minimum qualifications:
  • Master’s in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR bachelor’s in any of the above AND master’s in physical education, any life science physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music OR the equivalent per Board Policy 7211.
  • Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and community college students and of staff and students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • teach dance appreciation, all levels of Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and two of the following specialties: Hip Hop, Tap, Folkloric, Salsa, Partnering and Choreography
    • direct on campus concerts and organize and lead off-campus touring ensembles
    • work and collaborate with diverse population of dancers and choreographers when mounting a Folklorico concert
    • maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas
    • develop and teach online courses
    • establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and students
    • evaluate and assess teaching methods
    • plan, organize, and present lecture and lesson materials and concepts
    • write, review and evaluate curriculum and make recommendations
    • understand diverse learning styles and teaching strategies
    • work with and advise students having a broad range of skills, motivation and academic or vocational goals
    • incorporate current technology in the classroom
    • assist in performance settings and promotional efforts
    • use multimedia technology in classroom instruction
    • communicate effectively, both in oral and written communication
    • apply evaluation and assessment methods
    • identify and use learning outcomes and assessment that lead to course and program improvements
    • teach strategies that address the needs of students with a variety of learning styles
    • participate actively in department and college committees and in the shared governance of Allan Hancock College
  • 4. Knowledge of:
    • dance traditions from various regions of Mexico and Spain
    • evidence of professional experience in the dance industry to advice students on career matters
    • commercial dance styles as leading towards a certificate in commercial dance
  • 5. Evidence of:
    • professional experience in the dance industry to advice students on career matters

SCREENING PROCESS
A committee will review applications. Meeting minimum qualifications does not ensure a candidate an interview. Therefore, it is important that the application be thorough and detailed. Applicants will be assessed on the breadth and depth of education, training, experience, skills, knowledge, and abilities. A limited number of applicants will be invited for an on campus interview at the college at their own expense. All interviewed candidates will be asked to present a teaching demonstration.
