The California Arts Council’s American Masterpieces–Three Centuries of Artistic Genius is a major initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts to acquaint Americans with the best of their cultural and artistic legacy. In March 2009 California’s American Masterpieces, in partnerships with California Department of Parks and Recreation, celebrates California Indian Baskets with an exhibition opening at the California Museum of History, Women and the Arts.

The collection of California Indian Baskets is part of the State’s permanent holdings. The exhibition will represent six geographic regions of California—Northwest, Northeast, Central Coast, Central Valley and Sierra, Southwest and South Coast. The exhibition will also include a photo-collage with didactic narrative. The plan is to tour the baskets and the photo-collage throughout California to museums, cultural centers and libraries.
